2017 BMW Alpina B7 xDrive: Because 'M' would be too easy

Ultra-luxe Alpina BMW set for debut at the Chicago Auto Show

The Chicago Auto Show is right around the corner, and BMW and Alpina have teamed up to bring us the B7 xDrive. This 7-Series offshoot ramps output up to 600 bhp and 590 lb-ft of torque. In addition to the barrage of horsepower, Alpina adds a sport-plus mode that lowers ride height by almost an inch and allows for a more dynamic response from the driveline.

The changes to the powertrain allow this Bimmer to rocket from 0-60 in 3.6 seconds and on to a 193 mph top speed -- remember, this is a full-size German luxury car we're talking about. The 4.4-liter V8 is stuffed full of high-strength internals in order to manage the 20 psi of boost on top of the 10.0:1 compression ratio. An air-to-water intercooler helps drop inlet temperatures and optimize power. Maintaining the vital fluids of this hot drivetrain are additional radiators and a transmission oil cooler.

An ultimate driving machine needs more than just power, of course, and Alpina steps up to the auto show plate there, too: 7-Series standard run-flat rubber gets ditched for Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires wrapping lightweight aluminum wheels. The 15.5-inch front rotors are clamped by four-piston fixed calipers and the rear 14.5-inch rotors are slowed by floating units.

At this time pricing is still being kept under wraps; we'll find out closer to the B7's fall launch date.
