It’s true, bro. What about the 911 Turbo?
We’ve been hearing it for a while. We knew it was inevitable: Porsche is turbocharging the 911. Not just a 911 variant or two as has been done since the 1975 model year, but all 911s.
Everyone saw this coming, but Porsche has just announced that the refreshed 2016 Carreras -- to be displayed at the Frankfurt motor show -- will be powered by twin-turbocharged 3-liter engines. The only 911s not getting a breath of forced air will be the 911 GT3 and GT3RS.
Porsche cites ever-stricter emissions and fuel-economy standards as the motivators behind the shift to forced induction. Thankfully, forced induction allows a replacement for displacement -- with the new 3-liter churning out 370 hp in the Carrera and 420 hp in the Carrera S, both cars are up 20 hp on the 2015 models.
Turbos aren’t the only thing to jaw about: An updated suspension featuring ZF rear-axle steering will be optional on the Carrera S. Also optional is an electro-hydraulic lift system to help get the 911 over bumps without having to worry about scraping a bumper.
The new models will be available in March, and the base 911 sneaks in at just over $90K, with destination charges.
