LIGHTER, TIGHTER CHEVY PONY CAR DEBUTS MAY 16 ON DETROIT’S BELLE ISLE

Chevy is continuing the slow strip tease of the 2016 Camaro, set to be revealed at Detroit’s Belle Isle on Saturday, May 16. Today we have a darkened shot of the rear end and a piece of the new hood. The company is pushing the toned looks of the new pony car, which has lost a few hundred pounds over last year’s model.

“The Camaro went to the gym and came out with a lithe, more athletic physique for the sixth generation,” said Ed Welburn, vice president, GM Global Design. “It’s a more expressive evolution of the Camaro’s iconic character -– and one that complements its leaner size and sharper reflexes.”

That sharpness will do well against the new Mustang, which received an independent suspension setup for the sixth generation. Both cars will now weigh about the same, have equivalent suspension hardware and about the same amount of power. That means that now, it all comes down to the person in the driver’s seat.

  It’s a good day to be a pony-car fan.

The 2016 Camaro will get a new aluminum hood with sculpted curves, along with a few new character lines that emphasize the wideness of the car, even though it has a smaller footprint than its predecessor.

Chevy is inviting journalists to check out the car on Sunday, May 17. Hopefully, we’ll get the full specs then, along with a full view of the completed car.
