High-def rearview mirror coming to Cadillac CT6 sedan

Flagship large Cadillac to get screen view unobstructed by rear passengers, pillars

Cadillac introduced a high-resolution streaming video rearview mirror for its upcoming CT6 halo sedan. The company says the mirror increases the field of vision by about 300 percent.

The mirror, which works off of a small camera mounted in the rear, eliminates any rear-seat, rear-pillar or passenger obstructions, and also reduces glare and improves low-light visibility. Nissan is trying the same thing with its Rogue crossover.

“The closest comparison to this kind of rear vision would be driving a convertible with the top down,” said Travis Hester, Cadillac CT6 executive chief engineer.

Inside the mirror is a 1280 x 240-pixel TFT-LCD display with 171 pixels per inch. The HD camera is coated with a hydrophobic layer to keep the lens clean, regardless of the weather. A button switches the mirror back to a normal reflective surface.

The technology will reportedly debut on the 2016 Cadillac CT6 at the New York Auto Show.
