Ram prices ProMaster City van at $24,125, reveals fuel economy figures

Gets 178 hp; good for 29 mpg highway

The 2015 Ram ProMaster City will start at $24,125 for the basic Tradesman Cargo trim when it goes on sale in January. It will do battle with the Ford Transit Connect and the Mercedes Metris van in what’s becoming a crowded North American small van market.

Moving up the lineup, the Tradesman SLT Cargo will cost $25,650, the Wagon with rear and side windows will go for $25,125 and the Wagon SLT will start at $26,650.

All ProMaster City vans get the company’s 2.4-liter Tigershark engine making 178 hp at 6,400 rpm and 174 lb-ft of torque at 3,900 rpm. That motor, plus a nine-speed automatic transmission, is good for 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

Important van specs include a payload of 1,883 lbs., a tow rating of 2,000 lbs., 131.7 cubic feet of cargo space and 48.4 inches between the wheel wells—which will fit a standard pallet, by the way. Above the wheel wells, the ProMaster City’s cargo area is 60.4 inches wide.

Out back, the ProMaster City gets 60/40 split rear doors, with the larger door swinging toward the driver’s side, making it easier to access larger cargo as well as not blocking the curbside path to the van.

The five-passenger wagon gets a three-passenger second row with a 60/40 seat split, with each section capable of folding and tumbling forward.

The 2015 ProMaster City is assembled in Turkey. Conversion into a cargo van occurs in Baltimore -- presumably to get around that pesky chicken tax.
